Winter Elopement In Iceland // Lizzie & Sam

If there’s one place in the world that we could visit again and again… and again, it’s Iceland.  We’ve been super-fortunate to visit a handful of times now for an elopement in Iceland but each time we return home it’s the couples and their stories that we remember this beautiful country by.

Last June we had an unforgettable time capturing the small and intimate wedding in Iceland of Lyndsey and Keith at Budir church on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula so it was eye-opening to be able to travel back in February to the same part of the country with a familiar landscape that had transformed into something entirely different.

Lizzie and Sam flew in from England and we met for the first time a couple of days before their elopement at the Sandholt Bakery in Reykjavik (our favourite breakfast hangout) and chatted away over a fantastic pesto and salami sandwich with sourdough bread and a coffee.  The next day we hired a four-wheel-drive, grabbed some food for the road and slowly made our way out towards Budir Church.

The morning of their elopement was super-relaxed (exactly what they wanted) and as wedding photographers it’s always interesting to observe the build up of energy, excitement and anticipation as the ceremony time approaches nearer and nearer.

After their moving ceremony (performed by the always cheerful Pall Agust) we all walked back to the hotel to grab a hot coffee and relax a bit before heading out to explore the landscape together.  A lot of the off roads were inaccessible due to the snow so we packed a shovel (just in case) and managed to make our way through the snow (thanks to some mad 4WD skills) to the Djupalonssandur black rock beach and spent the rest of the afternoon there until the sun went down.

Hanging out with Lizzie and Sam on their elopement in Iceland is an experience we won’t forget and every time we think of the white, snowy landscape in Snaefellsnes we’ll think of these guys.

  6. i’ve seen a handful of búðir wedding stories – but this is without question one of my favourites. the pale pink lighting (bottom few photos) in particular is stunning, as are the intimate kiss photos at the church itself. warm regards to the bride and groom 🙂

  7. I had to wait until coming back home to seeing these on a big screen and put some time aside to enjoy your storytelling skills. What a beauty!

  8. The intimacy of the church – low ceilings, high pews ends – contrasted with the wide open, wild terrain is just so deeply moving. Some favorite shots are the ones in the pews post-ceremony. Just enthralled with this visual capture of this couples’ marriage day.

  9. Great style, great colors, your work is gorgeous!
