Planning to elope at Glencoe isn’t as daunting as it might at first seem. In fact it’s pretty straightforward if you follow this guide! The reason why Glencoe is one of the most popular places to elope in the world (apart from being so dang beautiful) is because of how easy it is to elope there!
Glencoe is situated in the Scottish highlands and easily accessible by road from the 2 major cities, Edinburgh and Glasgow. The area is renowned for its epic valleys, rugged mountains (including the iconic Buachaille Etive Mòr), wild rivers and luscious forests. Glencoe literally has everything you could dream of and offers the perfect backdrop for an intimate elopement or wedding. Due to its vastness, it also offers a sense of peace and quietness. If you’re a couple looking for a private setting away from busy tourist spots, then Glencoe is a great option.
There’s a lot of information below so make yourself a warm beverage, find somewhere comfy and enjoy the read!

Why elope at Glencoe?
- Locations are easily accessible – The most amazing thing about Glencoe is how close together the locations are. Forests, mountains, lochs, rivers and small waterfalls are just a stone’s throw away from each other and don’t require long hikes. Parking is conveniently located through Glencoe and free at most locations.
- Hotels and restaurants – It’s easy to find good food and accommodation. There are some conveniently located hotels at Glencoe (such as Glencoe House) as well as many places to grab a bite to eat.
- Close to major cities – Glencoe is just a 2.5 hour road trip away from Edinburgh and Glasgow so it’s possible to make a return journey within the same day. A lot of couples that elope at Glencoe actually choose to get ready in Edinburgh Old Town, drive out for the day to get married at Glencoe and then return to the city in the evening for a romantic meal in one of Edinburgh’s many amazing restaurants. Having your elopement at Glencoe also makes it easier if you have guests due to the shorter driving distance.
- Intimate atmosphere – Even though parts of Glencoe are popular, it’s really easy to find quiet locations. There are many secluded spots that offer the perfect setting for a private vow ceremony.

Where is the best place to elope at Glencoe?
Let’s begin by first taking a look at some of the incredible elopement locations that Glencoe has to offer. All of these locations are close proximity to one another and easy accessible without any strenuous hiking required.
Glen Etive
Glen Etive branches off the main A82 road that runs directly through Glencoe. The road last approximately 12 miles and right at the very end is Loch Etive which on a calm day can look stunning with the mountain backdrop reflectting onto the loch.
Glen Etive offers a peaceful setting for those that want a bit more privacy. Running parallel to the road is River Etive with its numerous wee waterfalls and rock pools. There are also a couple of small forests and plenty of mountainous backdrops found throughout the Glen. It is famously known for being a filming location for the popular film ‘James Bond: Skyfall’ (one of my favourite movies from cinematographer, Roger Deakins ;)).

Kilchurn Castle elopement at Loch Awe
If your idea of a dream backdrop is an ancient Scottish castle on a loch then look no further than an elopement at Loch Awe! It’s the only location on this list that requires a bit of a longer drive (around 40 minutes from Glencoe) but it really is worth it! It can look particularly amazing on a dark, misty and overcast day. To have an elopement at Loch Awe you will need to contact the landowner and pay a fee of approximately £100 to be granted permission.

Buachaille Etive Mòr
Located between Glen Etive and Glencoe. This pyramid shaped mountain is one of the most photographed spots in Scotland and an amazing backdrop for an elopement or portrait photos. This stunning backdrop is just minutes away from road access which means it’s super convenient and easy to access.

The Study
The Study is easily one of the most picturesque viewpoint locations in Glencoe and one of the most elevated. To access The Study you will need to park at the Lairig Eilde car park. The walk from the carpark lasts around 20 minutes and is fairy flat and easy for most of the way. There is a semi-steep incline towards the end of the walk as you reach the final location but nothing too strenuous.

Glencoe Lochan
Glencoe Lochan is located in the village of Glencoe and just a few minutes walk from Glencoe House. It is widely regarded for its serene mood and rich forestry surrounding it. It is particularly beautiful when the still water reflects the surrounding trees, creating a beautiful mirror-like surface for your ceremony or portrait shoot backdrop. The 15 minute walking trail that circles the loch is quite relaxing and easily accessible. There is plenty of free parking nearby.

The wee white house at Glencoe
This secluded white house (The Lagangarbh Hut) sitting under a mountain peak is probably one of the most iconic locations in Scotland. It’s a wonderful place to wander on a misty day and although it looks remote it’s actually just a 5 minute walk from the main road. Parking is available on a layby on the opposite side of the road.

Lost Valley (Coire Gabhail)
One of Glencoe’s best kept secrets. For adventurous couples, eloping at the Lost Valley (or Hidden Valley) offers a unique and exciting experience. The Lost Valley is accessed via a path between two of the Three Sisters mountains. The journey starts by parking at The Three Sisters carpark (paid parking) and from there, following the path downhill to the old track through the glen. The hike can be quite steep in some parts and will require a very light amount of scrambling. The hike takes around 1 to 1.5 hours each direction.
Step by step instructions for accessing the Lost valley.

Best time of the year to elope in Glencoe?
Spring (Mar-May)
Glencoe comes alive with wildflowers and greenery, providing a romantic backdrop for an elopement or wedding. The yellow and orange landscape eventually transitions to green and for a short period you can find a mixture of colours. The temperature becomes warmer and makes eloping outdoors more comfortable. I’d still recommend bringing an extra layer (shawl, coat or cardigan for example) just in case as there can be days where the temperature is colder. Wildlife such as deer can still be observed if you’re lucky! The landscape is quieter as the tourist season hasn’t reached it’s peak yet.

Summer (Jun-Aug)
The landscape comes to life and the days are much longer. The weather is warmer and a little bit more predictable, making it comfortable for an outdoor elopement. This is especially ideal if you’re planning on having guests join you for your outdoor ceremony. The extended daylight means that there is a larger time window for photos and more time to explore. Midges are present in summer however, so that is one thing to be mindful of. I recommend carrying a bottle of ‘Smidge’ midge repellent to help keep them at bay.

Fall (Sep-Nov)
Fall is probably the most popular time of the year to elope at Glencoe. The landscape transforms into a tapestry of earthy reds, oranges, and yellows and temperatures start to cool a bit but are generally still pleasant. Although the weather is still unpredictable, rainfall is slightly reduced and midges have disappeared by now. Due to the angle of the sun at this time of the year, light is generally softer and golden hour light is a sight to behold! If the weather is clear, I recommend scheduling your portrait session to line up with golden hour if you can. It’ll be worth it!

Winter (Dec-Feb)
If you prefer a magical, cosy atmosphere then a winter elopement at Glencoe is the way to go! The landscape at Glencoe gets even more dramatic with snow covered mountain tops. The days are much shorter and the sun stays lower in the sky which means a beautiful, soft light throughout the day. Winter is off peak season for tourism so you basically have the landscape to yourselves! Definitely bring layers (like a shawl, coat or cardigan) and be mindful of the reduced hours of daylight as it can be totally dark by 3:45pm. A ceremony at noon is recommend to ensure enough daylight for your portrait session after your ceremony.

Where to stay when eloping in Glencoe?
Glencoe House Hotel
Glencoe House is a beautiful hotel with an interesting history and some incredible views of the surrounding area. It is situated perfectly around 20 minutes from Glencoe village and just a short 15-20 minute drive to many of the major elopement ceremony locations.
The rooms are great to shoot in due to the larger interior space and window light and the food and service is top notch. If you feel like spoiling yourselves on your elopement day then Glencoe House is the way to go! I highly recommend their selection of suites.

Kingshouse Hotel
Kinghouse Hotel is conveniently located just of the A84 near the beginning of Glencoe valley and the turnoff to Glen Etive. The original section of the hotel is one of the oldest inns in Scotland, dating back to the 17th century. The hotel features modern guest rooms including their ‘signature rooms’ that I recommend for elopement couples as they offer more comfort, space and window light. Downstairs there is a great restaurant and bar, both offering a selection of Scottish food and beverages.

Inverlochy Castle Hotel
Inverlochy Castle Hotel is the go-to if you’re after a bit more of a luxurious vibe for your elopement day. Located a few miles from Fort William, it is known for its 5 star experience and beautiful grounds. There are 17 unique rooms furnished with antiques and period pieces which makes them great for ‘getting ready’ shots. Located on the ground level, ‘Albert and Michel Roux Jr at Inverlochy Castle’ restaurant is highly regarded and a great choice for a romantic elopement dinner for two!
Ardrhu House
Ardrhu House is a Victorian-era house situated on the shores of Loch Linnhe. It is located just a few miles from Fort William and Glencoe. There are a selection of luxurious suites with timeless character, each with beautiful views of the surrounding area.
Dalness Estate
Dalness Estate is a picturesque mansion located about 25 minutes down Glen Etive road. The estate’s scenic location and private setting make it the perfect location for an elopement or intimate wedding. The entire estate can be rented so it is a great option for elopement couples bringing guests or planning an intimate wedding.

St. Mary’s Wedding Space
St Mary’s wedding space is a beautifully restored and curated church home situated about 30 minutes from Glencoe. Owners, Charlotte and Jamie have created a warm and inviting space that you will feel right at home in. St Mary’s wedding space is also a great indoor space for a ceremony or intimate dinner for an elopement couple or small wedding party.

Strath Lodge
Strath Lodge is a large modern home set in a stunning mountain landscape just a short stroll away from Glencoe village. It is a great option if you would like more of a relaxed feeling of being at home during your stay at Glencoe.
Airbnb

Booking an Airbnb means you can have a quiet place to yourself that perhaps offers a more intimate atmosphere. I have a list of really cool Airbnb accommodation options to save you time searching.

Glencoe elopement tips
- Rent a car – The easiest way to see Glencoe. Cars can be rented directly from Edinburgh and Inverness airport or from all city centres. Traveling by car provides freedom and flexibility, allowing you to stop at various attractions and go at your own pace.
- Elope during the week – Weekdays are less crowded than weekends which means you will have a more intimate experience. Other vendors are more likely to be available during weekdays, giving you more choice when choosing your elopement suppliers.
- Arrive earlier – If you can, arrive at Glencoe at least a day or two before your elopement day. This way you can explore the area, familiarise yourself and even find a location for your ceremony.
- Good footwear – Leather waterproof boots are a must at Glencoe. Even on a dry and sunny day you can find boggy areas. The terrain is quite rugged so footwear with decent grip is highly recommend.
- Bring water and snacks – The last thing you want to feel on your elopement day is hungry or thirsty. I recommend bringing a couple of bottles of water and some snacks to keep energy levels up.
- Midge repellent – A must if eloping in summer. ‘Smidge‘ is the brand I personally use.
- Embrace the weather – Part of the beauty of eloping in Glencoe is that you never know what weather you will get! If it rains or if it’s windy, embrace it! Some of the most romantic and dramatic photos can occur in this kind of weather. If it’s sunny you will be rewarded if you wait to catch the golden hour light. No matter what the weather is like, embrace it and make it a part of your story.
