A Wedding In The Highlands Of Scotland

Alex and Spencer travelled all the way from the United States to Scotland to celebrate their wedding, choosing the breath-taking Scottish Highlands as the setting for one of the most meaningful days of their lives. Last August, I had the absolute joy of photographing their wedding at Gairnshiel Lodge, a truly spectacular venue tucked away in the heart of the Highlands and surrounded by rolling hills, heather, and vast open skies.

An Emotional First Look With Dad

From the very beginning, the day was filled with emotion. One of the most powerful moments unfolded just before the ceremony, when Alex shared a first look with her dad. As he saw her for the first time in her wedding dress, tears filled his eyes. The two of them then shared a quiet father–daughter dance, away from the bustle of the morning preparations. It was an incredibly tender moment, raw and honest, and a reminder of why documentary wedding photography is so important — these fleeting moments matter deeply.

Following a heartfelt church ceremony, everyone returned to Gairnshiel Lodge to continue the wedding celebrations. The interiors of the lodge are beautifully designed, filled with natural light that make it a dream to photograph. We took a moment to take some relaxed portraits inside before heading out into the surrounding heather-covered hills, where the Highlands truly showed off. The landscape offered a dramatic yet peaceful backdrop, perfect for a few wedding portraits before heading back to the wedding celebrations at Gairnshiel Lodge.

As the evening unfolded, the atmosphere shifted into full celebration mode. There were emotional speeches, incredible food, flowing drinks, and a dance floor that stayed lively well into the early hours. The warmth, laughter, and energy from Alex and Spencer’s family and friends made the night unforgettable.

Photographing a wedding in the Scottish Highlands is always inspiring, and Gairnshiel Lodge is a venue that leaves a lasting impression. For couples dreaming of a Scotland destination wedding, this part of the world never disappoints — it offers beauty, intimacy, and a sense of timelessness that’s hard to match. It’s genuinely one of my favourite wedding venues in Scotland.
